Networked Tools: an introduction
"Networked Tools" are server-based applications include file repositories, task databases, calendars, wikis, as well as real-time communications like instant-messaging and shared displays (aka web conferencing).
When the work of a collaborative team or a community of practice is stored on a server (instead of in many individuals' email in-boxes) team members have access to the latest materials 24/7 from any location. This is "Network-centric" work.
"Network-centric work" practices are proven means to greatly increase productivity for information workers.
When a team or community of practice works in a network-centric way, the tools can hold their collective expertise. The community accumulates organizational knowledge that otherwise walks out the door each evening.
The tools alone will not improve the collaboration capabilities of a group; consistent methods of use in a culture that endorses and supports use of the tools is a necessary compliment to achieve significant productivity gains. See the Resources section for lots of tips on managing the use of tools in your organiztion.
